Follow these best practices for bullets:

• Introduce a list with a clear, descriptive sentence or phrase.
• List the most import information or most likely action first.
• Write sentences with approximately similar line lengths.
• Use the same sentence structure in each bullet.
• Use a minimum of two bullets.

• When possible, limit lists to approximately seven bullets.

  Note: Human factors research has not identified the ideal number for a bulleted list. The research clearly shows, however, that users are easily overwhelmed when presented with too much information at once. Shorter lists decrease the chances of information overload.

Do not use:

• The same word to start each bulleted sentence.
• Bulleted lists for strictly sequential items such as instructions.
