User interface labels

User interface labels appear on different components on the screen. For example:

• Wizard step names
• Tab names
• Section headings
• Field labels

Case

Use title case for labels but do not capitalize words in complete sentences used as a UI label. Do not capitalize prepositions four characters or shorter. Capitalize first letter of the first word of compound words, that is, hyphenated words.

Bad

• Number Of Accidents
• Credit card number
• Estimated value of Home

Good

• Number of Accidents
• Credit Card Number
• Residence Visible to Neighbours
• Non-specific Location

Parentheses/brackets

Avoid using parentheses or brackets in labels.

Bad

• Total Area (excl. basement)
• Waiting Period (in hours)

Good

• Total Area Excluding Basement

Question marks

Do not use question marks in labels unless the label is a complete question.

Bad

• Age?
• Weather Related?

Good

• Age
• When did loss occur?
• What happened?
