The following illustration shows a simplified representation of the typical information flow between PolicyCenter and the payment gateway:

Typical flow for up-front payments using a payment gateway: 1) User adds an up-front payment in PolicyCenter. 2) PolicyCenter exit point opens Payment Gateway. 3) Payment Gateway processes transaction. 4) Payment Gateway posts to servlet. 5) Servlet processes response and creates entities. 6) Payment Gateway shows confirmation page. 7) Payment Gateway open PolicyCenter entry point. 8) PolicyCenter does additional processing and displays updated information.
